Shoutout Arizona Article!

Updated: Dec 12, 2020

I had the pleasure of being interviewed for Shoutout Arizona! Here is the interview, you can get to know me a little more!

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Carrillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimberly, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most? The value that matters most to me is empathy. I say empathy because to me, that’s what helps the world be a kinder place, for everyone. When we step out of our own shoes and try to feel like what it may be in the other person’s shoes, can really humble us. When I photograph my clients, I do practice empathy. I think to myself, how would I want to be photographed at this moment? How would I feel if I was the client? Are they comfortable? Happy? I don’t know what that client may be going through at the moment, but I want that hour or two they are spending with me, to be less stressful, fun even! Most of my clients are dog parents/guardians. I want not only for my human client to be comfortable and happy, I want my furry client to be less stressed as well!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I am an energetic, fun, dog photographer. Dogs get everyone more excited than most things in life! I mean, who can see a wagging tail and not be happy?! What sets me apart from other dog photographers is the advocacy I have for shelter animals. I donate to rescues and shelters from the session rate. So, every time a client books with me, they’re helping save a pet’s life. I also continue to take & attend workshops to help me better know how to handle dogs. I am even Pet CPR Certified. It isn’t easy being a dog photographer. Dog’s have a quick attention span, get distracted easily, some are scared of the situation. I overcome those challenges by continuing with my dog education. I have the technical skills to photograph, so the settings become natural for me, that way I can really focus on my furry client to get that perfect image.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

If my best friend was coming out to visit and I were to take her around town for a week, we would stop by all the dog friendly places! I love to educate people and my friends, about dog and dog health. The first place we would go is to OHSO in Downtown Gilbert. Their food is delicious, it’s located in a fun spot, and they allow dogs! I would then take her to the Phoenix Zoo. Dogs are allowed at the Zoo and I love showing people what type of wildlife we have in Arizona and they also teach about the wildlife and how to make sure they are taken care of as well. Another place I would love to take her is to South Mountain. I would love to show her the city from above. And of course, hike with out dogs. There are some many natural beauties to show around Arizona!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout? I think that Maricopa County Animal Care & Control has helped shaped me into the dog photographer I am now. I have been photographing for almost a decade now and have photographed almost every genre. When I started volunteering at Maricopa County Animal Care & Control, I saw what the dogs and cats were going through. They are well taken care of at the shelter, but they’re in kennels, alone, and scared. I rescued two dogs from there, and couldn’t be more thankful for my two furry best friends. I continue to volunteer, not just photographing the animals there, but I also walk the dogs and help with enrichment activities. I think, MCACC has definitely help shape me into the dog advocate that I am now.
